Coaching Staff


Varsity Head Coach Andrew Hodson
Coach Hodson is in his 6th season as the Cougars Head Coach, since following Hall of Famer Tom McKinney in 2004. Hodson is a native of Wabash, Indiana and graduate of Wabash High School, where played Basketball and Tennis. Coach Hodson graduated from Ball State University with a Degree in Technology Education, where he served as a head manager for the Men’s Basketball team. During his final year at Ball State, Coach Hodson served as the 8th grade coach/Varsity Assistant at Wes-Del Middle/High School. Upon moving to Bloomington, Hodson served as the BHSN Freshmen Coach   (2000-01), JV Assistant (2001-02), Varsity Assistant (2002-04), and Varsity Tennis Coach (2001,2002-Regional Finalist both seasons). Hodson is married to Sarah (Downs) Hodson and they have 2 children, Grant and Claire.

Varsity Assistant Coach Jeremy Swafford
Coach Swafford is entering his first season as the Cougars Varsity Assistant Coach. Swafford is originally from Ellettsville, Indiana, where he attended Edgewood High School. Coach Swafford most recently served as the head coach at Lighthouse Christian Academy for 3 Seasons where he led the school to a record 14 wins last year. Coach Swafford attended West Virginia University, where he ran Cross Country and track for the Mountaineers. Swafford earned a degree in Athletic Education/Physical Education in 1998. He also served as a tire carrier in the Nascar Nationwide and Truck Series for 3 years. Coach Swafford is employed at Grimes Pools, where he is a landscape foreman. Swafford and his wife Amy have two daughters Makayla and Allie.


Junior Varsity Coach Kevin Koontz
Coach Kevin Koontz is entering his sixth season at Bloomington North, and his twelfth overall. This will be his fifth season as the head coach of the Junior Varsity. Before joining Bloomington North, he was the 7th grade coach at Jackson Creek Middle School from 1998-2001, and the freshmen coach at Edgewood High School from 2002-2004. Coach Koontz graduated from Bloomington High School South in 1995 where he played baseball. He earned a degree in English from Indiana State University in 2006. Koontz currently teaches language arts at Perry Meridian Middle School. Coach Koontz and his wife Tania live in Spencer, Indiana with their two daughters Kenadee and Addison.


Junior Varsity Assistant Coach Matt Levy
Coach Matt Levy began coaching basketball at BHSN in the 2007-2008 season as a volunteer assistant for the freshmen team. Before becoming a part of the Cougar Basketball Program, he was an assistant coach for the 8th Grade Boys Basketball team at Jackson Creek Middle School during the 2006-2007 season. Coach Levy is originally from Los Angeles, California and graduated from Chaminade College Preparatory (West Hills, California) in 2005. Coach Levy is currently a senior at Indiana University, majoring in Physical Education and Health. For the past 6 years, Coach Levy has worked and coached at several basketball camps including UCLA’s Men's Basketball Camp, Pepperdine University Men's Basketball Camp, and Double Pump Inc.


Freshman Coach Derek Dant
Coach Derek Dant is in his second season on the Cougar Basketball Staff, his first year came in 2007-2008 when he was a volunteer for the freshmen team. During last season Coach Dant coached the Batchelor Middle School Eighth grade boys team. This season Coach Dant takes over as the Freshmen Head Coach. Coach Dant grew up in Danville, Indiana where he attended Danville High School. Dant is currently a senior at Indiana University completing his degree in Physical Education. Coach Dant is currently fulfilling student teaching duties at BHSN in the Physical Education Department.


Freshman Assistant Coach Ryan Simmons
Coach Ryan Simmons is in his second year with the Cougar Basketball program. Coach Simmons has offered to assist with the freshmen team as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. He is a native of Plainfield, Indiana and graduated from Avon High School in 2004. Coach Simmons attended Indiana University and graduated in May 2008 with a degree in Political Science. He is now a graduate student with the Indiana University School of Education and is pursuing his teaching license and Master's Degree in Elementary Education. He is currently applying for teaching positions.
